There are no unmapped places left, only unvisited ones, and the difference turns out to matter enormously.

Satellites have flattened discovery into confirmation. What remains is the older pleasure: standing somewhere and finding it unlike its picture.

We walked for three days to reach a lake that any phone could have shown us in a second. The phone could not have shown us the cold.
